Pruning your flowering plants at the wrong time can result in the plants not flowering or bearing fruit the following season.  This varies depending on the time of year which the plants actually do their flowering, as well as how you prune them.

When it comes to pruning your trees, shrubs, and  flowering plants, there are a lot of things to be wary of. Knowing the right time of year to prune seasonal bloomers can mean the difference between losing a seasons worth of bloom, or having a more beautiful bloom than ever.

The reasons for wanting to prune your trees and shrubs may vary, but the list of reasons why it is beneficial spreads far and wide. For the most part, regular pruning results in plants, trees, and shrubs growing healthier and shapelier, in addition to being able to bear more flowers and fruit.

While it does take a careful eye and experienced hand to get the finish and seasonal timing of your pruning right, there some standard guidelines for pruning your seasonal plants:

  • Prune your plants, trees, or shrubs at the correct time of year. Failure to do so can result in low to no flower yield for a season, and at worst, can kill the plant in some cases.
  • Use the right tools for the job. Knowing the different between when and how to use different kinds of sheers, saws and pruners can affect pruning efficacy as well as plant recovery.
  • Make sure you are using the right cut, for the right effect. Different cuts will have different outcomes on your plants trees and shrubs.
  • Always avoid stripping bark. Stripping bark when pruning can subject your plants and trees to longer recovery time, and disease.
  • Know when to bring in an experience professional.
